Gallery +359 was established in 2017 by the collector and art manager, Vladimir Iliev. From the beginning of 2018, Irina Batkova is an artistic director and curator of some of the projects in the exhibition plan. The gallery is located in the building of a restored water tower built in 1929 in Sofia, designed by the German engineer Franz Salbach. It is built at the highest point of the Lozenets district in Sofia based on a French system for the construction of water towers. The architecture of the building has provided other than being a hydraulic structure, to serve also as a watchtower. Today, this historic landmark is a space for contemporary art.
The programme of the gallery is designed around several permanent projects - Formatting the absence, Point of intersection, Radius and Ecosystem - and explores a wide range of ideas and strategies in modern art. They focus on different aspects of contemporary artist's work not only as an artist but also as a curator able to create a context that provokes new perspectives to their own work. Modern artistic practices involve the study of diverse information, documentation, archiving, use of unusual techniques and materials, often crossing the boundaries of their own professional field to create a completely new field of internal links and communication codes. They form the backbone of the gallery's exhibition plan, which includes Bulgarian and foreign artists, representatives of different generations of contemporary art.
The Gallery hosts a Residential Program that provides a working stay from 2 weeks to a month for modern visual artists to create site-specific installations for the water tower space. The Images in Motion Project traces the development of the image as a means of communication in an environment of constantly updating technology and the dominant influence of virtual reality in the modern world. It includes authors who work with new media, performance, video art and content creation with the help of new technologies, unlimited internet capabilities for disseminating information, research practices in border fields across different arts related to new ways of communication set by the non-static image.
An important part of the energy on the stage of contemporary culture is accumulated by the work of independent organizations of contemporary artists, curators, designers, architects, performers working in the field of contemporary theatre and dance. The Ideas in Motion Programme foresees the exchange of projects with such organizations and their presentation in the water tower space.
The gallery organizes meetings and lectures by contemporary artists who present their artistic concepts and the ways they choose to present them - the goal is beyond our exhibition practice to create a field of wider discussion on the content that contemporary art accumulates today. Within its work strategy, Gallery +359 builds a unique collection of contemporary art displaying Bulgarian and foreign contemporary visual artists. As part of our work on exhibitions, we develop a publishing platform that will not only publish documentation for projects but also art books in limited editions that artists prepare in parallel with their projects.
