Biography
Born in 1953 in Plovdiv, Professor Vihrony Popnedelev graduated with distinction from the Art College in Kazanlak in 1972 and from National Academy of Arts in 1979 – Painting department. In 1995 he became Associate Professor, and in 2001 - Professor of Painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts. He also specializes in Cite des Arts (Paris) in 1995 and in 2010.
Professor Popnedelev has so far had 46 solo exhibitions in Bulgaria, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary; оver 70 group exhibitions in Bulgaria, France, Great Britain, Germany, China, Austria, Italy, Spain, Israel, Switzerland, Finland and many others. Over 15 participations in international plenaries. With his works Professor Vihroni Popnedelev has received international reputation and recognition.
Among his achievements and awards are the award and title "Golden Feather" for Contribution to Bulgarian Culture in 2013 and 2002, Artist of the Year for 1992, First Prize in the National “Art and Wine Competition”, National Painting Prize of the Culture Ministries, 3rd Place Prize "Habitat" - UN, Vi Vesta- Artist of the Year prize, 1st Prize of "Man and Art", "South Spring" Prize, “Zahari Zograf” National Painting Award. Professor Popnedelev is one of the pioneers of the avant-garde art group "The City", established together with prof. Andrei Daniel, prof. Bozidar Boyadzhiev, prof.Gredi Assa, Nedko Solakov and Philip Zidarov.
In 1998 he created Art Centre Vihroni - a place open for meetings between people with ideas, talent and spirit from all countries and ages. In 2016 in Plovdiv he created an apartment - gallery of "Art Centre Vihroni", where about 40 works of the author are on display. The works of Vihroni Popnedelev are part of the Bulgarian National Cultural Heritage. His works are part of the permanent collection of the National Art Gallery, Sofia City Art Gallery, Hugo Voeten Collection in Belgium and many other private collections worldwide. Vihroni Popnedelev lives and works in Sofia, Bulgaria and teaches Painting at the National Art Academy – Textile-Art and Design department.
About
Proffessor Vihrony Popnedelev’s artistic style can be defined as: His Own style with increased colour intensity. Inspired by the overall theme “Life is Beautiful”, in his works he uses various media such as acrylic and oil paints, clay, wool, original paper, contemporary art and performance. Favorite themes of the artist are Nudes, Landscape, Still Life, Abstracts and Portraits, which gained him international popularity. Prof. Popnedelev enjoys working with textiles, and especially using the felt technique, which gives him extreme freedom in combining colors.
Vihroni Popnedelev is one of the founders of the avant - garde group "The City" - the first group of artists who formalized contemporary art in Bulgaria with their exhibition in the Rakovski 125 Gallery. His closest colleagues are Prof. Andrei Daniel, Prof. Bojidar Boyadzhiev, Prof. Gredi Assa, Nedko Solakov, Philip Zidarov, Svilen Blazhev.
In 1998 he created the “Art Centre Vihroni”, located 40 km from Sofia, in the village of Dolno Kamartsi. The centre is famous for its educational courses in painting, ceramics, textiles and promotion of traditional Bulgarian crafts and arts. There prof.Popnedelev finds the space and inspiration to experiment in the field of ceramics, wood carving and metal sculpture using even non-standard materials creating art pieces from waste metal parts. He also develops curatorial activity by organizing international workshops and meetings. Art Centre "Vihroni" owns an apartment-gallery in the centre of Plovdiv, where you can see about 40 works of the author, including his unique hand made ceramic tiles incorporated within the apartment’s interior.
