Biography
Marica Kolcheva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in the 80s, works and lives in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Her educational background includes BA in Film Studies at National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts (Bulgaria) and MA in Photography at Royal Academy of Arts, The Netherlands. She has a specialisation in Photography & Fine art at Akv St.Joost (NL)
About
I’m inevitably curious about disassembling the mechanisms behind the things: how the world works, how our mind works and questioning the ability of photography to teach us how to see the world – actively - and to create change through understanding. We live in a shifted regime of visibility - not creating images, but rather living them; not creating a visual material, but rather living our life as a visual material; we communicate, feel and gain knowledge about the world in visual forms. Being an artist in this condition is almost being in a “permanent state of emergency” (Benjamin).
Revealing the (non-visible) extraordinarity that is hidden in seemingly mundane everyday gestures or investigating hard to be visualized subjects is my artistic interest as well as a life strategy. It allows me to help the other to see it and to create (visual) vocabulary to talk about it. My photographic work usually focuses on what is not easily visible, such as psychological or philosophical theories, scientific facts or phenomenons, topics which are more or less underestimated, not that well-known or seem inexpressible in one way or another. My main research question addresses the possible strategies to visualize what remains out of sight/ the invisible/ what is absent and non-existing/what is un-representable.
Within my work I want to shed a light on the historical moment we live in by understanding the world around us - I believe we can use photography medium to create new ways to see and be seen, and new ways to see the world and how it works, all in service of vision of making change.
