About
Sаpromat collective is the official continuation of the creative collaboration between Michaela Dobreva and Boris Dalchev, who graduated BA and MA in scenography together in the class of prof. Svetoslav Kokalov, and are currently PhD students under Assoc. Venelin Shurelov and prof. Svetoslav Kokalov. Both of them have numerous projects behind them as a scenographic tandem, realized on various stages throughout the country.
It is this theatrical context that provoked the choice of the name Sapromat. For both artists, the degree of complexity in playing with space and the materials sitting behind one or another intervention is close to the engineering discipline of sapromat. With the site-specific exhibition "Unapparent" in the spring of 2019 at the NBU Uniart Gallery, curated by Rosena Ivanova, the artists' collaborative work beyond the stage space is launched. Participation in the Telnik Contemporary Art Competition, curated by Irina Batkova, follows. The artists participated there with the installation "0" (zero), inspired by the interior of the building and the Möbius strip. At the beginning of 2020 follows the premiere of Phantasm, a performance created and inspired by the space and rehearsals at the chamber hall of the National Student House. The collective created the performance in collaboration with Tsveta Doycheva, who choreographed it. The composer is Angel Simitchiev (Mytrip). For Phantasm, Tsveta Doycheva and Sapromat have been nominated for the National Icarus Award in the category Contemporary Dance and Performance. The next important project for "Sapromat'' is "Invisible Cities" based on Italo Calvinos' novel. The immersive performance was created in collaboration with the Conclave Association, at the University Botanical Garden. It premiered in 2021 and was intended for a limited audience that freely walked around the garden listening to the main narration live through a radio transmitter and headphones, directed by Boyan Kratcholov. The visual intervention of "Supromat'' was again provoked by the natural environment of the garden, while conceptually complementing the dramaturgy of the action. For the immersive performance Invisible Cities, Sapromat collective has been nominated for the National Icarus Award, in the category of Scenography.

"Sаpromat" has been working with a site-specific approach for several years. They work together because, in Michaela's words, "the responsibility is not smaller, but bigger". Their works are integrated, woven into the fabric of the environment, of architecture and interiors, and therefore have a direct impact, defying the conventions of traditional visual arts. The art of "Supromat" is formed through collective effort and leads to a concentration of individual experiences in space-time. They also say of themselves that "the collective is a way of working, but also the focus of the work in the context of an interest in architecture". As for their shared sensibility, it is directed towards utilitarian spaces - places of function, flickering with the energy of the human spirit waiting to be released and given back to the people."
