Anton Stoianov lives and works in Berlin. He entered the Murals Arts Program of the National Academy of Art in Sofia, continuing his education at the Universität fur Angewandte Kunst, Vienna in 2001. In 2007, he graduated from the Universität der Künste, Berlin. In 2006, he was an exchange student at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco.
Anton Stoianov is represented by the xavierlaboulbenne Gallery, Berlin. He works in the field of painting, relief, installation, objects, design and scenography. Through experiments with typical or atypical materials, techniques, basics and formats, he explores the stylistic and conceptual aspects of contemporary painting. He applied the principles of historical religious Byzantine painting in his cycle of “icons”, creating a new iconography based on the contradictory social clichés characterizing today's society. In 2012 he creates a long-term project of large-format canvases - "painting" with used socks and trying to define critically the classical understanding of the process of creating a painting. It follows by a series in 2014 where he builds monumental, symbolic objects that are covered by vinyl.
His latest series (2018) is inspired by his glassworks specialization at the Glaser-Innung Berlin. It is determined by dynamic compositions, existing in harmonic round or square formats, using mirrors and glazes for glass. Drawn on the mirror surface, it reflects the surrounding space and in this way the artist transfers the boundaries of the display entering the field of installation.
Anton Stoianov has numerous solo shows and participations in group projects at: xavierlaboulbenne Gallery, Berlin, Apartment, Berlin, Nice & Fit, Berlin, Bulgarian Cultural Institute Haus Wittgenstein, Vienna, Elektrohaus, Hamburg, Sariev Contemporary Gallery, Plovdiv, Æther, Sofia etc. He participated with a solo exhibition at the art fair Art Cologne, 2018. He also participated in the fairs in Istanbul and Berlin. Anton Stoianov is part of the of Louis Vuitton Collection, Paris.
